Cyclone Alfred – Pool Care Guide
With Cyclone Alfred affecting parts SEQLD and Northern NSW, we’ve put together a comprehensive guide on how to protect your pool before, during, and after extreme weather.
With Cyclone Alfred approaching, it’s crucial to take preventative measures to protect your pool and equipment. But remember as per the government instructions, “If it’s flooded, forget it”
Follow these expert tips to minimise damage and ensure your pool remains safe.
1. Water Level.
If your pool water level drops below the level of the skimmer box, please immediately turn off your pool pump to prevent potential damage to the pump itself
2. Secure Loose Objects
Remove or tie down pool furniture, umbrellas, toys, and accessories to prevent them from becoming dangerous projectiles.
3. Do NOT Drain Your Pool
A full pool stabilises against hydrostatic pressure. Lower the water slightly to allow for overflow, but never drain it completely.
4. Protect Electrical Equipment
Turn off and unplug pumps, chlorinators, heaters, and lights to prevent damage from power surges or flooding.
5. Remove Pool Covers
Strong winds can tear covers or send them flying. Store them safely indoors.
1. Remove Debris
Clear out leaves, branches, and any foreign objects. Empty skimmer and pump baskets before switching equipment on.
2. Inspect Pool Equipment
Check for visible damage before turning your system back on. If flooded, let your pump dry for 24-48 hours before testing.
3. Adjust Water Levels
If water overflowed, backwash media filters or siphon excess water carefully. Never adjust multiport handles while the pump is running.
4. Balance Pool Chemistry
