SAVE WATER THIS SUMMER

17 January 2017

Pool owners are increasingly investing in technologies that reduce water consumption, not only in a bid to save money but to also increase the efficiency and lifespan of their investment. Products that promote sustainability make good financial sense and ensure we can enjoy life’s luxuries without harming the environment.

You don't have to live in a drought-prone area to appreciate the benefits of conserving water. When it comes to conserving water in the pool, cartridge filters typically require less water and energy to operate than sand or DE filters. For example, Waterco’s Opal Cartridge Filter is designed to house an extra-large filter cartridge, maximising dirt holding capacity and minimising filter maintenance.

However, it’s the current generation of cyclone technology pool filters that are making a splash. Take, MultiCyclone Filter – an award-winning device designed and manufactured by Waterco and available in your local Swimart store – which offers water saving with a twist. It works by spinning sediment down to the sediment sump, while the cleansed water spirals upwards, and is cleaned by simply opening its purge valve.

This revolutionary compact swimming pool filtration system conserves precious pool water and reduces maintenance, easily saving up to 7000-litres of pool water per year. Fitted to existing pool filters or installed to new pools, it has no moving parts to wear and no filter components to clean or replace.

In short, the pool water ends up cleaner with less upkeep. The MultiCyclone gathers dirt that would normally go into the filter, and drains it out. This cuts 80 per cent of the dirt that clogs your filter and extends its lifespan.

Visit your local Swimart store to find out how our latest range of pool filters can help you to be water wise.

WELS-rated water efficient appliances

Just like you see on energy rated kitchen and laundry appliances, the Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) helps Australian consumers choose water efficient appliances and fittings for the home, garden and swimming pool.

The user-friendly system starts at zero stars and stops at six – the more stars on the label, the more water efficient the product – making it easy to compare how effective products are at reducing water consumption throughout the day. For example:

Low flow showerhead: Low flow showerheads use considerably less water than standard showerheads, saving roughly 14,500 litres per household each year.

Shower flow control device: Restricting the flow of water to the showerhead, these devices can also be fitted to household taps. (Just ensure that both these and the low flow showerhead mentioned above are compatible with your home’s hot water system.)

Tap aerators: Flow controlled aerator adaptors are simple to install and can reduce the water flow from between 15-litres per minute to either 6, 9 or 12-litres per minute.

Dual flush toilet: This water-saving system gives you the option to flush either half or all the cistern water, resulting in savings of around 51-litres per person per day.

Washing machine: Top-loading machines tend to be more efficient than front-loading models.

Dishwashing machine: A WELS-rated dishwasher uses half the water typically used by traditional models.

Hot water systems: Insulating hot water pipes prevents water and power wastage. Also, make sure your hot water thermostat isn’t set too high as adding cold water to cool the temperature of water is wasteful.

Rain water tanks: Harvesting rainwater to use in the home and garden can save thousands of litres of water each year, per household, and reduce your reliance on mains water.
