One of the great benefits of swimming is that it gives your body an all over workout regardless of your age or fitness ability. From simple laps swum daily to more vigorous aqua aerobics and resistance training, your pool and swim spa can be a valuable tool to help you stay in shape, both mentally and physically.

Even the simplest of water-based exercises in a reduced gravity environment is beneficial for the body, especially if you experience stiffness or aching muscles.

Before embarking on an exercise regime, it's always a good idea to talk to your health professional to determine what is best for your body – and what movements you need to avoid.

Try this at home

Start by walking in the pool – backwards, forwards and sideways – to improve your strength and posture on top of the more cardiovascular effects you get from swimming laps. The great thing about water is that you can go through the whole spectrum of slow, gentle movements right through to fast, high levels of exercise, as you get fitter.

Starting off for a few minutes and increasing the duration, here are a few simple exercises that will help you burn calories and improve your fitness in your pool:

The bicycle: Rest your elbows on the edge of the pool, or even a pool noodle, and pretend you're riding a bike.

Double leg lift: Leaning back on the edge of the pool on your elbows, lower your legs straight down and then raise them up as high as you can, keeping them perfectly straight and together.
Jumping jacks: Start by jumping from a standing position with just your legs pointing outwards then progress to include the arms.

Flutter kick: Facing inward, hold on to the edge of either the pool, paddleboard or noodle, kick your legs rapidly behind you.
Lateral raises: A great way to work out your deltoids (shoulder muscles) is to use pool weights, kettlebells (just don't drop them or you could damage the pool surface), or even two pool noodles, raising and then lowering them straight out from your sides.

Get fit in a swim spa

With inner city properties at a premium and the suburban block increasingly succumbing to subdivision, the portable swim spa offers a space-effective and economical way to exercise without investing in a lap pool.

This type of spa satisfies both relaxation and fitness briefs. Contoured seating at one end allows you to sit back and enjoy the benefits of full hydrotherapy while a multi jet unit at the other end offers a highly effective workout.

Exclusive to Swimart, the Tahiti Swim Spa is a family friendly, five seater packed with innovative features including 40 stainless steel massage jets to soothe away aches and pains, two LED mood lights, a state-of-the-art control system, a custom crafted Western Red Cedar cabinet, and a lockable cover.
