Pool media

26 September 2016

Pool water, as we all know, needs to be properly filtered to remove fine particles and to produce the transparent water we associate with a healthy, hygienic swimming pool.

Spring clean your pool filter media

“Swimming pool water filtration is a balance between water quality and water quantity,” says Swimart’s Chris Fitzmaurice. “The finer the filter media, the faster the increase in pressure across the filter bed, and the more frequent the need for backwashing or filter replacement.”

Dirty pool filter media results in less water flow and filtration, which can increase the amount of algae growth and the strain on your pump as it tries to push water through a clogged filter.

  • Turn on the pump and backwash for 2 minutes or until the water in the sight glass (located on the filter) is running clear
  • Switch off the pump again
  • Set the filter valve handle to the rinse position and ensure the handle locks in place
  • Turn on the pump and run the rinse process for 1 minute or until the water in the sight glass is clear
  • Switch off the pump
  • Close the skimmer valves to prevent water from entering the filter from the pool. Empty the filter skimmer basket and clean out the hair catcher
  • Return and seal the skimmer basket and hair catcher
  • Reopen the skimmer valves
  • Reset the filter valve to filter and ensure the handle locks into place
  • Switch on the pool pump
  • Backwash the filter as usual until the backwash wastewater is clear of particulates

If you are still unsure if your filter media needs cleaning, or don’t feel confident doing it yourself, visit your local Swimart store or call 1300 991 104 to arrange a home visit from one of our qualified service technicians.
