Gunyama Park and Aquatic Centre
Those near Beaconsfield and Zetland in Sydney will soon be set for a great summer of water activities, with a design for a brand new aquatic and leisure centre to be added to the Green Square development finally approved.
Architects from all over the country were invited to propose designs for the new development; the winning team from Andrew Burges Architects put forward an imaginative design inspired by the beach pools of Sydney. It also takes design cues from native landscapes and Indigenous culture.
At the centre of the design is a 50m heated outdoor pool that is set in a larger, irregular shaped ‘beach pool’, something that set the design apart from other entries. In particular, the beach pools at Bondi, Bronte, South Curl Curl and Malabar were cited as great sources of inspiration for the design.
Designed to cater for those swimming laps and leisure swimmers, the aquatic centre will cost around $50 million. Construction will start in January 2017.
The entire centre comprises of many different elements, offering something for everyone:
- A 50 metre outdoor pool
- A 25 metre pool for swimming lessons
- An indoor leisure pool with interactive toys
- A hydrotherapy pool
- A crèche with indoor and outdoor play areas
- Fully equipped gym and outdoor training circuit
- Outdoor playground
